Hybridization of atomic orbitals is a theory that helps in explaining the molecular geometry and molecules with central atoms that exceed the octet rule.
Both bonding pairs and lone pairs of electrons use hybrid orbitals.
The type of hybridization on an atom in a molecule is determined by counting the number of other atoms bonded to the atom and the number of lone pairs of electrons.
